F.3.A.R. Why I'm Worried
Why I'm Worried...
Monolith knows horror. Their games have managed to freak me out, and incite terror that no other game besides Fatal Frame has done to me. Not only that, Monolith is the one that conceived Fear, created it, and made it what it is. You will be hard pressed to find another scenario where the developer of a game changed hands, and they managed to do better than the original. It just doesn't happen. The new developer is Day 1 Studios, who did an excellent job of porting Fear 1 to consoles, but this still doesn't put my uneasiness at rest.
2) They Are Already Changing The Way The Story Is Being Told
Pointman's face in Fear 1 was a thing of mystery and wonder, and he remained a silent protagonist throughout the entirety of the game. Day 1 just revealed his face in the announcement trailer. If they are willing to do something that drastic in the announcement trailer, what else are they willing to change as far as the way the story is presented? I have a sinking feeling that the silent protagonist of Fear, which I really liked, won’t be around for F.3.A.R. Also, according to the press, John Carpenter, famous for his work on “30 Days of Night,” “offered advice on the game’s cutscenes.” There are going to be cutscenes in Fear now? One of Fear’s goals has always been complete immersion for the player. The player has never been taken out of the first person perspective in a Fear game. So now they are adding cutscenes to the game? Why change the formula? Why do this? I think it is going to majorly detract from the immersive feel Fear has always brought me.
3) The Name
I have never been fond of having numbers represent letters in a title. F.3.A.R. just looks stupid as a title to me. What are they going to do next, call the sequel F.E.4.R.? I don’t like it.
4) Cover System?
One of the developers of F.3.A.R. stated, “Players can look forward to…an evolved cover system.” What? A cover system for Fear? The whole point of Fear is to kick in Slow Mo and run in guns blazing. What is this game going to turn into, Gears of War? I hope what they are alluding to is the reintroduction of a lean mechanic back into the series. If not, I am worried about what this might mean in terms of how Fear’s gameplay might feel.
5) It Comes Out this Fall?
This Fall? Huh? Fear 2 took 4 years to hit the shelves after the original. Why is this one coming out a year and a half after the last installment? This can’t be a good sign. Take a look at the picture below. This is a small snippet of game play footage we have from F.3.A.R. It is the Fear 2 engine!
Day 1 was also quoted saying this, “Players can look forward to new features, such as divergent co-op…” Why would you ever, put co-op in a horror game? The whole point of horror games is to build an atmosphere where you feel alone, scared, and uneasy. How is that possible when you are with another person, who runs ahead of you and triggers scripted events when you aren’t looking? I don’t think it’s going to work. I’m not sure what “divergent co-op” means, but I still expect it to drastically cut into the scariness of this game. And your Co-op buddy is Paxton Fettel? Why are you fighting with him now? He was your sworn enemy in the original Fear? Why is he your buddy? It makes no sense
Now of course, I want to stress that most of this is speculation, and I will be able to form a more informed opinion when more information is released about this game, but as it stands right now I am more worried than excited for the sequel to one of my favorite series. Hopefully this uneasiness won’t persist and so we will just have to sit and painstakingly wait for more information.
